SMPG FAQs

How do I become an SMPG facilitator?

Those interested in becoming a SENG Model Parent Group (SMPG) Facilitator must attend a two-day facilitator training workshop ($375), which is offered at our annual conference. A training can also be organized anywhere in the country if there are enough people interested. SENG requires 15-20 participants to run a facilitator training workshop.

Does my SMPG facilitator training expire or need to be renewed?

It is expected that active SMPG facilitators will continue to improve their repertoire of tools each year by attending workshops, SENGinars, and other SENG offerings each year. It is also required that facilitators maintain their annual SENG membership (see below)

Recertification requirements:

  • Must run at least ONE group
  • Must be a current member of SENG
  • Must complete at least one CEU SENGinar (offered multiple times per year)- offered at no cost to you if you are a SENG member from a choice of 3-4 options.

*Facilitators may send a portfolio of trainings to the current leader of SMPG training for review annually.

Does my co-facilitator need to also be a certified facilitator?

No, not to begin with, but your co-facilitator needs to read the training book. It is encouraged that your co-facilitator to go through the training as soon as possible.

Do I need a co-facilitator to run an SMPG?

You need a co-facilitator, but your co-facilitator does not need to have gone through the SMPG facilitator training program (can be a friend, colleague, spouse, past participant, etc.). Your co-facilitator must read the training book Gifted Parent Groups: The SENG Model.

Can I run my groups online? How do I become trained to run groups online?

You will need to have gotten your Master Facilitator training and then go through the online facilitator training. All online groups must go through SENG exclusively.

Do I have to be a SENG member to run SMPGs? How much is a membership and how often do I need to renew?

Yes! Membership is $129.99 annually. Benefits of membership include discounted SENGinars, discount conference registration, advertisement for your groups, access to the SENG logo, access to printed materials, support in running your groups (including a “Facilitator Mentor” who has office hours to give feedback). In addition, your contact information and location will be listed on the SENG website. Also, you are supporting SENG’s mission!

Does SENG require a fee to list and advertise upcoming SENG groups?

There is no additional fee to post upcoming SENG groups to the website, but you must be a member of SENG for us to advertise your upcoming groups and to use the SENG logo and name on your printed materials.

Who keeps track of membership and how will I know when I need to renew?

You will receive an automatic renewal notice through email, so please be sure to keep your contact information with SENG current.

How do I become a Master Facilitator? What is a Master Facilitator? How much does it cost? Does this expire?

There are different pathways for becoming a master facilitator. After running at least 2 groups, you may attend a one day master facilitator training at conference. Or, you may submit an application that demonstrates competency and current knowledge of group methodologies. Contact the office if you are interested in becoming a master facilitator to discuss the requirements that will work best for you. There are no additional fees to become a Master Facilitator outside of the initial costs of the coursework and your status does not expire although SENG does encourage even Master Facilitators to update their portfolio’s.

How much should I charge participants for my SMPGs?

This will vary based on your location, demographic you are serving, and how much you are charged for renting a space, and how many printed materials you pay for. We suggest charging at least a nominal amount to participants. If you’d like help determining your fees, please contact the office.

How many weeks must my SMPGs run?

It is highly recommended that groups are 8-10 weeks, but 6-7 weeks are also acceptable.

How many participants should I have in my SMPGs?

8-12 participants, not to exceed 15 individuals (couples count as one registrant).
