SENGconnect January Topic: Perfectionism, Pressure, and Permission to Be Human

About:

As we move into a new year, many families find themselves setting fresh goals and hoping for smooth starts. But for gifted and twice-exceptional (2e) children, the beginning of the year can also reignite feelings of pressure. Pressure to achieve, to “get it right,” or to live up to their own high standards. In this SENG Connect session, we’ll explore the emotional roots of perfectionism and how it uniquely shows up in gifted and 2e children. Together, we’ll discuss how to help kids recognize perfectionistic thinking patterns, reframe mistakes as essential parts of learning, and replace self-criticism with self-compassion.

Through shared experiences and practical strategies, we’ll also reflect on how modeling self-acceptance and flexibility as adults can create emotionally safe spaces for children to take healthy risks and grow.

Themes include:

  • Recognizing signs of perfectionistic thinking in gifted and 2e kids
  • Reframing success, failure, and effort through a growth mindset lens
  • Encouraging self-compassion and emotional resilience
  • Giving kids, and ourselves, permission to be human
