Mental Health

Mental Health at SENG

Mental health is an important dimension of development across the lifespan. It encompasses emotional, psychological, and social experiences and influences how people think, feel, connect with others, respond to challenges, and navigate daily life.

For gifted and twice-exceptional people, understanding mental health requires attention to the whole person, including strengths, needs, identities, lived experiences, relationships, and ways of engaging with the world. It also requires consideration of the environments and systems that shape development, including families, schools, workplaces, communities, and cultures.

SENG provides education, resources, programs, and connections to help gifted and twice-exceptional individuals, families, caregivers, and professionals better understand mental health and identify appropriate sources of support across the lifespan.

Mental Health Support Across the Lifespan

Mental health needs and sources of support may change across life stages, circumstances, relationships, and environments. SENG believes in empowering gifted and twice-exceptional individuals and families to identify support structures that are responsive to their needs and circumstances across their lifespan journey.

Support can take many forms. Clinical mental health care is one part of a broader ecosystem of professional, relational, educational, peer, and community support.

For decades, SENG has offered SENG Community Groups (SCGs) as a nonclinical, facilitated peer-support resource for gifted and twice-exceptional individuals and families. SCGs provide opportunities for participants to connect, share experiences, learn from one another, and build community. They are not a substitute for clinical mental health care.

Visit the SENG Community Groups page to learn more about nonclinical peer support.

As a complement to SENG’s longstanding nonclinical community-support offerings, the SENG Mental Health Provider Directory has a distinct purpose: helping gifted and twice-exceptional individuals and families identify professionals who provide clinical mental health services. Maintaining this distinction helps individuals and families better understand the type of support each SENG resource is designed to provide.

Programs & Events

SENG’s mental health programming evolves from year to year in response to the needs and interests of our community. Many programs are offered live only, reflecting our commitment to creating conditions for thoughtful, authentic conversations about experiences and topics that can be difficult to discuss openly elsewhere.

Through facilitated conversations, expert perspectives, and shared learning, these programs provide opportunities to explore mental health within the complexity of gifted and twice-exceptional lives.

Mental Health Provider Directory

Looking for a mental health provider?

SENG provides a Mental Health Provider Directory to help gifted and twice-exceptional individuals, families, and caregivers identify professionals who provide clinical mental health services and have expressed an interest in supporting gifted and 2e populations.

The directory is specifically focused on clinical mental health services, including clinical support and assessment within each professional’s scope of practice. Coaching, educational therapy, educational consulting, college coaching, and other nonclinical consultation and support services are not currently included in this directory.

Provider information is voluntarily submitted. Inclusion in the directory does not constitute endorsement, recommendation, verification, or credentialing by SENG. Individuals and families are encouraged to independently verify a provider’s qualifications, licensure, areas of specialization, and appropriateness for their needs.

The Mental Health Provider Directory is updated annually in September.
